So, like, yeah, I missed some stuff, but release dates shift around and stuff. The new Noisem, Blossoming Decay, is really good. I didn’t get a shot to tear apart the new Six Feet Under. And, of course, there will be a new Hatebeak out soon enough… well, not soon enough, but soon. It’s not shameless self-promotion if it’s a parrot doing it, huh?
Antigama is releasing The Insolent on Selfmadegod, and while I like it, it’s not incredible. For those who don’t know, Antigama are a Polish grindcore band that plays a frenetic, spazzy type of grind that walks in the Discordance Axis type of vein. The production here is clear and precise, and makes the record sound pissed off. The songs that stick out are catchy and mean, and move enough, but the problem is that half of the record just plods along and never really picks up. The songs that are great are really great, probably the best that Antigama have ever done, but the ones that are filler are just kind of… filler. So, this is cool and I like a good grind record, but this is good, not great. 6 Fucking Pecks.
In the vein of foreign grind bands, King Parrot are releasing Dead Set. These guys basically came to the States to play and, like, never stopped, only returning home to play a couple of shows and then back. You know, an “if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere” type of approach. Dead Set is good, catchy and furious, with a little bit of humor, which King Parrot are known for; but for me (and I know everyone doesn’t feel this way), this guy’s high-pitched voice kills me. Maybe I don’t get it, but it kinda takes the nastiness out of this. Other than that, the production is clear, the songs are brutal and sometimes catchy. I like this a lot, but the goose getting choked by a cat voice is a little much for me. The video is cool, too. 7 Fucking Pecks.
Baltimore doomers “notice I didn’t use doomsters” Corpse Light release Without Form on Grimoire Records. This is that kind of dreamy doom/metalgaze amalgam that has a Neurot Records feel. I’m digging this pretty hard; it’s nasty and mean and pretty all at the same time, and it goes places, moves instead of the typical type of thing where it’s just one riff repeated over and over. As a first effort from a relatively unknown band, this is really good, so check it out. Looking forward to hearing more. 6 Fucking Pecks.
