The Brett Netson Masterclass: Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom.

Brett Netson.
One of the most soulful, inventive, vivifying shredders on the face of the planet.

Bringer of sublime aural sturm und drang via roots-y-alt-rock-meets-psychedelic-doom outfit Caustic Resin. Art rock force multiplier in Built to Spill. Vanquisher of smarmy motherfuckers. And, now, mastermind of a ridiculously killer multidimensional, dark snarling rock trio, Brett Netson & Snakes.

On the occasion of the release of Snakes’ transcendentScavenger Cultit seemed as good a time as any to ask the group’s iconoclastic leader for a playlist of his heavier influences.

We expected eclectic, and Netson did not disappoint…

1.Ozzy Osbourne: Diary Of A Madman/Black Sabbath: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

In junior high, I only had a few friends. It was all bikes, guitars and weed. Pretty simple existence until we got our hands on some acid! Wayyyy too young to be doing that stuff, but for better or worse, thats what happened. On our third time through Diary Of a Madman, dudes fucking mom came home! The hallucinations of the music, Aleister Crowley, swirling fire, bats and shit…it all evaporated right quick! We just had to be cool and keep our little secret without laughing too much. Holy fuck that was weird.

2.Pink Floyd: Obscured By Clouds/More

Their soundtrack records they made in the middle of the Dark Side sessions. The magic is all in the timing! What I like about UFOMAMMUT, Yob and the like, is the same skill in knowing when to go BOOM!

3.Scorpions: Tokyo Tapes

Dude, Uli Roth…

4.Free: Heartbreaker

When I was prepping to record with Earth, I got out all the Free records. ‘Cause that was the thing to do.

5. Ash Borer: Demo LP

Good Black metal can change time and space, these guys make moss grow everywhere in the room, too.

6. Butthole Surfers: Locust Abortion Technician

Always good when you wonder,”Where the fuck did this come from?”

7.TAD: Gods Balls

This weren’t grunge — it was like blues metal to me. Boom, boom boom boom.

8. Melvins: Gluey Porch Treatments

When I was a janitor, this record got me through dark times. Good work songs.

9.Laughing Hyenas(live)

If you saw these guys in the day, then you know, the heavy roll went on and on and on. I never wanted it to stop.

10. Yob: Clearing the Path To Ascend.

These guys upped the ante. With heavy soul. Go see them live!
