Full Album Stream: Snøgg – “Chhinnamasta”

Snøgg formed in 2013 and have been steadily releasing EPs and touring Eastern Europe for the past six years. Meticulously but naturally their sound has evolved from weird to otherworldly.

Now with Chhinnamasta, Snøgg’s debut album, but sixth release overall, they sound completely in control of what they call “Freeride black metal.” Chhinnamasta is forty-two minutes of time-devouring, mind-expanding experimental blackened post-metal that requires several deep listens to fully understand. A cursory listen of Chhinnamasta is quite rewarding, but only full immersion can bring about total comprehension.

Ulv, Snøgg’s guitarist, bassist, keyboardist and vocalist, calls Chhinnamasta “the next step in the ever-evolving journey” of his band. He writes: “This time our experiments took us into more post-metal sphere, while lyrics discuss the lust and power of modern human beings, their ability to overcome difficulties that they face on a regular basis, and the way they internalize self-restrictions to move forward. The title ‘Chinnamasta’ does not depict the story of the self-decapitated Hindu goddess, but we borrowed concepts from other religions and stories outside Hinduism to illustrate Chhinnamasta.”
