The Decibel Study Hall of Fame: Reign in Blood

Those of you who dragged your asses to the previously formatted Deciblog on a regular basis might be familiar with my 8-year-old son, Sam. At the time, he won a trio of bad-ass Immortal skatedecks, courtesy of Vans and Nuclear Blast, for dropping 75 words about how bad-ass he thought Immortal is. Truth is, he does think Immortal is bad-ass, along with a whole host of other metal and punk bands that most eight-year-olds haven’t even exposed to, let alone own copies of their albums on vinyl. Since becoming victorious in the Immortal contest last spring, Sam purchased a bunch of Iron Maiden, Suicidal Tendencies and Twisted Sister vinyl from an acquaintance who was selling off his record collection and has discovered the hellish majesty of Slayer. So, what better way to further his metal indoctrination, as well as give his grandparents coronaries, by having him review their classic, Reign in Blood, as the first installment of the Deciblog’s “The Decibel Study Hall of Fame” series. Then, have a picture of him wearing part of his Halloween costume and flipping the world the bird?

SLAYER

REIGN IN BLOOD

Def Jam (1986)

One day my dad and I were driving to the library and he was listening to the new Slayer album. I thought it was okay, but not as good as older Slayer, like the first album. My dad says that most people think Reign in Blood is their best album. I saw it in his record collection and I wanted to listen to it. And now I’m going to review it.

“Angel of Death” is one of my all-time favorites. The chorus is the best part of the song. Dude, it blew me away! The first guitar part and scream was funny, but sick. The middle guitar solo by Kerry King was awesome. The first part of “Piece by Piece” would have been better if it was shorter. “Necrophobic” is awesome, especially the drumming. “Altar of Sacrifice” is good, but it would have been better if it was faster – the “Enter into the realm of Satan” part is hilarious. The first part of “Jesus Saves” is awesome and the last solo by Kerry King is good too. “Criminally Insane” is one of my favorites; I like the “Take your fucking life!” part. “Reborn” is one of my favorites as well. The first part of “Epidemic” is awesome and the solos are cool, but I don’t totally like it. I had “Postmortem” stuck in my head for the last week because it’s really good. The entire album was fucking sick, just all of the lyrics about death kinda suck. My dad asked me to say something about the cover, but I don’t know what the fuck it is. All I can see is a goat holding onto a head on a spike or something. Oh yeah, “Aggressive Perfector” isn’t that good.

    Shame on you.

  • Aesop Dekker

Strange, but kids writing and listening to Slayer is never a bad thing in my opinion. Sam did great work and he loves Immortal. Good work.

  • EETFUK

This sucks just as much as the other guy making his kid do reviews.

Smacks of suburban little league dads. A lot.

  • http://twitter.com/photoray Raymond Ahner

Good on any 8 year old kid for listening to Slayer, but his dad could have at least gave him a record that the mighty Crud Wizard didn’t already review!

  • Hatchettothehead

I agree with Aesop Dekker.. Kids listening to and reviewing Slayer is NEVER a bad thing. My son is due to be born on December 31. We are naming him Hayden Slayer Davis. Is it going to be lame to have him review a Slayer album later on in his life just because some other kid already did?? Fuck no.

  • Heyburton

Good job Sam. Personally, Show No Mercy is my favorite, but then I’m not the one writing reviews, so it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that I wish I had been doing cool stuff like this when I was your age. Keep it up. And don’t let the negative comments get to you. Just like the Suicidal Tendencies song says, “You Can’t Bring Me Down!” Rock on.

  • Sfhoodiecore

sam, i’m sorry a bunch of retards insulted you and you efforts because ‘somebody did it first’ – there is NOTHING original under the sun, so screw them. i’m a fan of crud wizard, and now i am a fan of your blog. keep writing, keep rocking. much respect.

  • Me

You need to wash your son’s mouth out with soap. Discipline: It’s a good thing.

  • Sfhoodiecore

maybe they should just bypass the soap and get drunk while beating the poor kid senseless, huh? allowing your kids to think for themselves: it’s a better thing than taking advice from people who steal taglines from martha stewart.

  • Sliv

I personally think this is a better review than crudwizard, It’s actually written like an 8 year old metal head, instead of a fucking 8 year old writing an essay for his 3rd grade class on a topic that his dad picked for him, though thats just my opinion. Also, he gets bonus points for the mask, I had one of those when I was 8 too, and not some weird ass witch robes.

  • http://hookinmouth.net Anonymous

He’s 9 years old. There is a difference between thinking for himself and discipline. A 9 year old saying fuck this and fucking that doesn’t impress me.

  • jfury

Who gives a fucking FUCK if some crust wizard reviewed this or ANY other album Sam wants to write about?? All reviews by underage metalheads are welcome as long as they’re doing it out of their own free fucking will. Sam, write about whatever the fuck you please as long as you’re using your own brain and your own words. Everyone else can fuck the fuck off.

  • Dave

I’m surprised he didn’t notice the boners on the two dudes in the lower right corner of the cover.

Sam, awesome review and well thought-out! the one song i do love musically is altar of sacrifice, though the lyrics have always placed a question mark in my mind,
esp.,the first verse which i think is a little on the white-light side of the satanic spectrum of what a satanic priest might do.
and the third verse after guitarist Jeff Hanneman’s second solo comes off to me
inspired a bit by venom and the beginning of the book of revelations in the back of the holy bible. third line venom-esque “flesh starts to burn twist and deform” and fifth line, holy bible ‘”transforming of five toes to two”, aside from this i love the rest of the record and have a vinyl copy in my record collection. i love mostly everything by slayer. i admit i don’t like undisputed attitude (punk covers) because the song gemini (W.T.F.!) nor do i have the sountrack to the apocalypse, i didn’t care for most of the garage stuff and i already own the import editions of diablus in musica and god hates us all for those albums extras and what is slayer doing covering a iron butterfly song!! (hippie rock trying to be metal!). i think the cover of reigh in blood is a collauge of imagery, part satanic part politics. slayer to me have always been a mix of self-styled satanism, covert libertarian politics and music influenced by punk-rock/thrash metal and death metal. i love the fact Jeff Hanneman admited slayer in their writing is a democracy(there is a diagramical map and philosophy but no chief lyricist and yet tom araya doesn’t write lyrics very often and keeps himself spiritually disconnected from slayer(something i find ironically amuzing). lastly i don’t care for the song aggressive perfector either.

keep headbanging along to the KILLER sounds Mr. SAM STEWART-PANKO(kEVINS SON)

If a young boy (man) like SAM can/does understand the meaning of the “HARD”
diction he is using to describe his feelings and opinions concerning a music recording such as “slayer reign in blood” then so be it. even if he does have a laid-back soccer dad. do you know how many kids these days have the typical “Dyers eve” father figure or worse kurt “rocks for brains” angle for a dead-beat dad. I for 1 love the soccer/stage dad and tennis/sister mom.
they know how to treat their kids. a perfect balance of parent and friend in one. it is one thing to give children room to think for themselves yet quit another thing to let them get away with lying, cheating, stealing and the not always so common S.D.R.(sex,drugs,rape). i love children esp. the smart ones or even the ones whom are slightly off yet trying to do their best, but god fucking damn the bart simpson kinds of kids whom think their shit don’t stink, i fucking hate them brats!!

I was swearing by the time I was 3-4, and there wasnt a thing in the world anyone could do about it. That people are focusing on such insignificant things, call them pedantic and lame, because they are.

A pedant is a quibbler, and quibblers have already lost the argument.

I sure as hell did not listen to Slayer at your age. I think thats awesome and incredibly well grounded. There is an astonishing level of malice towards Sam in this thread. It really makes me think someones growth had been stunted along the way. Perhaps your mother did not hold you enough?

Sam, just know that grown folks hating on you is weak and pathetic, and they are merely projecting their fears, anxieties, prejudices, ignorance, and failures onto your efforts for what reasons I suggested above. Fucking adult fail. Pity them for they did not receive the kind of awesome attention your Pop quite obviously gives you. I met your old man and I cant think of a more decent person out there, and Im not the only one who thinks that, so you win. ive never heard anyone wish any part of Reign in Blood should have been faster! :D Are you a motorhead?

There is a cool band that was named after the song Necrophobic from Sweden I think. Killer riffs, sick drumming and great song writing. I dont know if the link will work, just copy and paste it. Its not the heaviest most extreme band to ever extremely brutalfist Jesus or anything but if you are a fan of metal riffs like I am then you would hear merit aplenty.
