Dave Mustaine or Billy Corgan: Who’s Crazier?

Dave Billy

The world of hard rock and heavy metal is filled with brilliant artists, and sometimes that thin line between genius and insanity gets erased. Usually in public. In very embarrassing ways. And there have been a lot of notable crazies in the music industry, but right now, Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine and The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan seem to be in a heated race to see which washed up rocker can reach the asylum first. Two auteur musicians, both of whom have made some really amazing music (and some really poor artistic decisions), both of them batshit insane in really surprisingly similar ways – but who belongs in a straitjacket more?

ROUND ONE: QUESTIONABLE INVESTMENTS

Both dudes are rich, so they’ve both frittered away their royalties on weird stuff.

Billy Corgan owns a regional wrestling promotion.

Dave Mustaine owns a tiny pony.

WINNER: Dave.

ROUND TWO: RELIGION

Now, I’m not saying that you have to be crazy to be religious. Plenty of totally sane people believe in some sort of deity. No, these guys are notable because of the extremes to which they take their Christian beliefs.

Billy Corgan is way into the crazy hippie stuff. To express his faith, he has recorded an entire album, Zwan’s Mary Star of the Sea, which is basically about Jesus and rock. He also started a website devoted to “Mind-Body-Soul” integration. Also, he’s into psychic mediums.

Dave Mustaine’s not pulling out the Tarot cards, but he refuses to perform at festivals with Satanic bands, won’t play old songs that he deems “too Satanic,” and he doesn’t seem particularly fond of gays, soooo…

WINNER: Billy. Christian fundamentalism doesn’t really surprise me anymore, but new age bullshit is always hilarious.

ROUND THREE: THE MUSIC

They are musicians after all, right? Which means they channel some of their crazy through their art.

Billy Corgan has done some really pretentious things with his music (for example, the current 44 song Teargarden by Kaleidyscope song cycle), but his real mania lies in his massive underground vault of unreleased material. He’s basically a squirrel, but instead of acorns he hordes songs. Even now that they’re rereleasing the Smashing Pumpkins catalog, he’s just putting out a bunch of demos instead of the bushels of unreleased songs he has piled up. Here’s a convenient list of the 250-odd original compositions he’s recorded but never released or even played live.

Dave Mustaine, on the other hand, has released most of his material, but he tends to like to bring in some of his extracurricular activities to his music. For example, did you know that Endgame was based on an Alex Jones film? Also note the 24 fanfiction in the booklet for United Abominations.

WINNER: Billy. It’s never a great sign when you can compare someone’s behavior to Prince’s.

ROUND FOUR: STATEMENTS TO THE PRESS

All rock stars say ill-considered things in interviews. These guys take it to another level.

Billy: “The Pumpkins, as a business, is a creative enterprise that’s constantly generating new waves of energy, through music, through cultural fucking-with… through the Tarot.”

Dave: “There’s so many houses without a dad that it’s just terrible. I mean, you know how they used to say there should be a license to have a baby? Well, as far-fetched as that sounds, I really think that, if the parents aren’t going to stick together, they shouldn’t make that kind of commitment to life. I watch some of these shows from over in Africa, and you’ve got starving women with six kids. Well, how about, you know, put a plug in it? It’s like, you shouldn’t be having children if you can’t feed them.”

WINNER: I mean, come on.

ROUND FIVE: CONSPIRACY THEORIES

THIS is the real meat of the thing. The previous sections could conceivably be written off as the results of decades of drug abuse or just general rock star behavior, but this is where the rubber (room) meets the road.

List of conspiracy theories Billy Corgan believes in: Chemtrails, the New World Order, the TSA as Gestapo, HAARP,  Genetically Modified Foods, “criminal wars,” mind control, all news as propaganda

List of conspiracy theories Dave Mustaine believes in: Chemtrails, the New World Order, birtherism, FEMA camps, global government, basically anything involving Obama taking away our guns/freedom

Billy’s Alex Jones interview (Summary here):

Billy’s onstage conspiracy rant:

Dave’s onstage conspiracy rant:

WINNER: Dave. I mean, Billy’s hat in that Alex Jones interview was pretty nuts, but I think “Obama was behind Aurora” pretty much clinches it.

OVERALL WINNER: Dave. Looks like the “Sweating Bullets” video was pretty prophetic, huh.

Slow “news” day around Decibel, huh?

  • michael lambright

too bad they’re both right, sheeple.

    • gnarlk

anybody who uses the term “sheeple” should be sent to a fema camp…

    This article is fucking lame.

half of those things are pretty well documented… genetically modified food DOES exist, preemptive wars against countries that havent attacked you and without actually declaring wars IS criminal, mind control is something government agencies have actually worked on and the new world order is a well documented agenda which would also include “global government”, something even mainstream news touched on for a bit after the 2008 crash.

lol right…I’m thinking what in that list isn’t real? most of it is real…these left/right zombie sheep should do themselves a favor stop talking, they’re embarrassing themselves.

  • posthumanistic

Whats with all the criticism of entertaining “conspiracy theories” from popular metal outlets lately?! First of all its a loaded term serving to discredit whatever the related topic(s) may be before even brought up.

And a lot of the examples you cite are true! Chemtrails – Look up, TSA – They look at us naked now for fucks sake, Mind control – MK Ultra was a govt run program, HAARP – another actual govt program, Gen Mod Food – Unless its organic (and even sometimes when it is) its GMO, FEMA camps – they exist and some are staffed.

Bums me out that Metal Sucks is always blabbing about this stuff, didnt expect the same from you guys… Spread music, not disinformation…

      “Spread music, not disinformation…”

take some of your own advice…

      • posthumanistic

Its called google. Use it and learn.

        • gnarlk

of course, because if it’s on the internet it must be true

          • You dumbass

Lol so you rely on the mainstream media for your information?

          • gnarlk

i rely on my own common sense and a finely honed bullshit detector. the mainstream media has it’s flaws and biases as does alternative media. the last thing i’m going to put my faith in is a clown like alex jones who’s likely getting rich off of people’s gullibility and paranoia.

          • http://twitter.com/TurdBandito Turdito Bandito

you realize how dumb you sound? You know things based on your own BS detector? lol come on….you’re too simple.

          • gnarlk

not as dumb as you, thank something. “lead me alex, i’ll believe anything you tell me”. fuck right off.

          • posthumanistic

Weak argument. They’re declassified govt docs. Watch another StateFarm commercial…

      • http://twitter.com/TurdBandito Turdito Bandito

        he did…you failed, congrats.

        • gnarlk

damn, i really should look up to a glorified snake oil salesman. fuck my life, boo hoo.
you’re living proof of what PT Barnum stated so eloquently…

    • B-ROCK

But, you don’t really believe that chemtrails are chemicals the government is spraying at high altitude to give the populace disease, right?
      http://www.nmsr.org/pilotsvu.htm
I do agree that not all which is labeled is ‘conspiracy theory’ is wrong/ridiculous etc, but in the case of ‘chemtrails’ the whole idea is ridiculous.

      • posthumanistic

I didnt say what the agenda was because I dont know. Most plausible theory I’ve heard is that they’re used to create an atmospheric barrier as to slow global warming.

So in your area you dont see planes spraying something out the back that spreads out and covers the sky to look like fake clouds? It happens almost every day where I live.

All I know is they exist, but arent acknowledged and thats a red flag.

  • Scott

The butthurt in the comments section of this article is magnificent. It was a funny article guys. Well done.

  • http://twitter.com/TurdBandito Turdito Bandito

meanwhile….now they are coming after the guns. The only people crazier? Progressives and people who think Democrats are “good guys”…BS just as wacked out and evil/corrupt as neocons.

  • http://www.facebook.com/skyler.l.miller Skyler Lane David Miller

You know what is really crazy? Voting for a fascist like Obama. Why don’t you write an article on all the liberal psychos in metal? Oh wait, probably because you are one….

    • gnarlk

      nice hat, assneck…

  • J

This article and the comments are flatout hilarious. It’s pretty easy for the poorly educated and those who don’t travel around to see these things to jump to conclusions about them all being out to get you.

The main problem with these theories is that all this supposed “secret” stuff that governments supposedly perpetrate would be pointless. If the US government really wanted to do any of these things like imprison the masses in FEMA camps, they’d just do it. There would be nothing to stop them. The camps aren’t necessary for that, there are plenty of large enclosed spaces that could be used in a pinch. If they wanted to control the minds of Americans, all they need to do is get a bunch of loved celebrities and news media to spread their word and people will follow it. MK Ultra was a catastrophic failure and in the end is wholly unnecessary for masses of people. If they needed to use chemtrails, they could use chemicals that can’t be seen in that fashion from the ground, there is no need for them to be visible. Genetically modified food does exist and has saved literally over a BILLION lives and despite what people tell you, there has never been any credible evidence to suggest that it is any more harmful/less nutritious than natural food. Most of the modification has to do with cross-pollinating different species of plants so that you can take things like fruit trees that grow a lot of fruit in warm, humid climates and breed them with related trees that survive better in the cold or in more arid areas so that people in colder/dryer places can have better access to that food.

You people take cursory internet searches and the words of your celebrity heroes as fact. Take 1 think that you are afraid of that people call a conspiracy theory and spend the time to research it thoroughly. Go to the supposed FEMA camp. Learn about jet propulsion in relationship to the atmosphere. Visit a lab and talk to the scientists that have saved countless lives creating “franken-food”. or better yet, study it yourself in a university. You’ll quickly realize that while there are people that are out there to harm you, the vast majority of people working on this stuff are doing it to help people and advance mankind (and of course, make some well-deserved money for their hard work).

    this article blows

This just made me respect Billy Corgan more.
